Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the painless insertion of fine sterile needles at specific points on the body which can effect healing change. Acupuncture is described by patients as an achy, electric, heavy, or warm sensation. A typical acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of needles into 6-8 acupuncture points. Depending on the condition being treated, the needles will be left in the body ranging from 15-45 minutes.

Acupuncture allows your body to go into a deep state of relaxation where healing can occur. In the stressful lives that we lead this is important, since the body does its best healing when it is relaxed.

How does acupuncture work?

Practitioners of Chinese Medicine believe that it is thru the manipulation of qi that healing results can be attained. Qi is the internal energy that is our life force. It provides us with momentum, creativity, and inspiration. It moves throughout our body via meridians or pathways to nourish and sustain us until death. In disease, our qi stagnates and blocks our meridians with pathogens our bodies have created out of disharmony. With the insertion of needles into specific points the qi is allowed to flow freely, thereby restoring balance, harmony, and wellness.

Western scientists believe that when a needle is inserted into the body it stimulates the release of  ßeta-endorphins. These chemicals are the body's own natural opiates or painkillers. They relax muscles, dilate blood vessels and calm the nervous system. Acupuncture is also thought to influence the release of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH), which is specifically important in the treatment of fertility, because this controls the release of hormones from the pituitary which in turn stimulates the ovaries through ovulation.
